OPTIONAL TRIP - PAXI - ANTIPAXI

Of the main six Ionian islands Paxi is the smallest. It is 10 km. long and 4 km. wide but full of impressive white boulders, beautiful beaches, small coves and sea caves. The capital Gaios at the east side of the island is a a picturesque village with traditional houses and narrow streets.

At the nourth lies the seaside village of Laka which is build on a bay whose coasts are covered with olives and pines. Paxi is a peaceful and quiet island ideal for relaxing vacations.

CAPE ERIMITIS
The cape of Erimitis is one of the most picturesque locations on the west coast of the island of Paxi. The sunlight reflects on its crystal-blue waters creating an astonishing iridescence, and the rocks take strange and impressive forms.

CASTLE OF ST. NIKOLAOS
The Venetian castle, (Kastro) was built in 1423 on the island of Agios Nikolaos, on the bay of Gaios's harbour. A windmill of the same period stands next to the castle.

MARITIME CAVES
The maritime caves exist as a strange geological phenomenon in the southwestern part of the island. A series of caves are gathered within 5 km area. The size of the caves varies, but they all have large, arched "gates" challenging the visitor to cross them by boat. Some of the caves are: Grava Achaiou, Grava Ipapandis, Grava Agrillas alias Megalo Andro, Grava Achandakas and Grava Landrou.

MONASTERY OF PANAGIA
The picturesque monastery of Panagia is built on the island of Panagia, at the entrance of Gaios' bay. On August 15th, the monastery's festival attracts all the inhabitants and the island's tourists.

ORTHOLITHOS
Ortholithos is a huge rock which emerges from the blue sea, situated on the southwestern part of the island. Ortholithos, combined with the maritime caves in the surrounding area, create a scene of unique beauty, which visitors can admire from a fishing boat at the nearest seaside settlement.

MOGONISSI
The beautiful deserted islet of Mogonissi is situated southeast of Gaios. Upon the islet stands the lonesome chapel of Agios Spiridon, built among the vegetation. Fishing boats from the capital bring here those who want to visit the islet. The surrounding area is a scenery of unique beauty with striking formations of the rocks and crystal blue waters. Near Mogonissi, the location of Mousmouli flers a captivating view, while in Tripito the visitor can admire the beautiful stone bridge.
